Irene Emery’s innovative construction of a comprehensive system for describing fabrics was recognized as a classic on its first publication in 1966. Based on years of study of a huge range of fabrics produced by hand or by strictly limited mechanization, its essential strength is its universality. In this monumental work, the structures and the descriptive terms applied to them are clearly presented according to their logical relationships to each other, moving from the simplest to the most complex. The book is divided into three parts: the raw materials of fabric structures (filaments and fabric elements); the fabric structure themselves, whether felted or made from interworked yarns; and structures such as stitches or appliqué. 376 b&w illustrations
(1900-1981) was Curator of Technical Studies at the Textile Museum in Washington.

This book has it all. Irene Emery's construction of a comprehensive system of terminology for describing fabrics, The Primary Structures of Fabrics, was recognized as a classic on the first publication of The Primary Structures of Fabrics back in 1966. Fast shipping, item was as described.. The Orsay is known for it's collection of Impressionist art, but I felt the book displayed very little of that style. I purchased this book after visiting the Orsay and reading very positive reviews posted on Amazon. Prints were not clear and colors were very faded. Finally a a good catalogue with excellent plates of all the paintings in this wonderful museum. We just returned from Paris, and a visit to the Musee D'Orsay. Washington DC

this is an essential book for any weaver, textile designer, fiber artist. Any college-level arts collection strong in fabric art - as well as many a needlework library - needs this definitive guide.. The color and content are terrific.. Author Irene Emery (
