Maryphyllis Horn received her B.A. in music education from Gettysburg College, PA, and her M.Ed. in music education from Penn State University, PA. For 31 years she taught public high school award-winning choral music. During much of this time she studied metaphysical and holistic topics, culminating in ordination from Sancta Sophia Seminary, a metaphysical, interfaith seminary in Tahlequah, OK. In 1993 she left teaching, to study Transpersonal Psychology at The Naropa Institute, CO. It was there that she experienced a profound mystical calling to shamanism. Within a few months' time she learned the basics of Shamanism, soul retrieval and other deep shamanic studies from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, CA. My wife and I both found the book a delight to read, a opportunity to recall strolls through Rome, and an incentive to quickly return to see the fountains with more informed eyes.. But Bourke pulls a vast amount of anecdotal evidence together in service to her hypotheses. Quite the opposite, these are often people you hadn't heard of, but who, thanks to Thomas's style, won't want to forget. It was embarrassing Carrington around a book with out its cover. Good. Nothing less than the very question "What is Civilization?" stands implicated.
Admittedly, theoretical history is difficult. Of course, thinking of technology in such evolutionary terms can ONLY be analogical--tools don't have genes, and they certainly don't procreate. Clustering great minds is often a winning proposition - unless the great minds drift into a tiring game of establishing a pecking order among themselves.
